Latest Developments

The Iraq Consolidated Appeal Process (CAP) for 2008, which seeks US$ 265 million for humanitarian action inside Iraq, was launched in Baghdad on 12 February. The full appeal can be seen at www.humanitarianappeal. net

A flash appeal was launched for Tajikistan on 18 February 2008, requesting nearly US$ 25.2 million to support population affected by extreme climate conditions causing lack of energy, water, food and other basic needs. For more information, please visit www.humanitarianappeal.net

John Holmes, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, visited the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel from 14-18 February. Mr. Holmes concluded that it was hard to see how the deteriorating situation in both Gaza and the West Bank, and the reinforced despair and sense of humiliation of the Palestinians, was a good basis for the rapid peace settlement so badly needed. He called for the current gulf between the reality on the ground and the aims of the negotiations to be bridged urgently. Further details of his visit can be found at www.ochaopt.org

UNICEF and of Understanding to boost access to education for children. The Gulf charity will work closely with UNICEF to support education programmes in Africa, Eastern Europe, South Asia and the Middle East. launched in 2007 by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai - is an initiative to bring education to one million children and help contribute towards Millennium Development Goal 2.
